The true Greek summer spirit…
The underwater volcanoes, the mild climate & the lime consisting soil of the Greek island of Chios, along with a tradition, rooted deeply in the ancient years, of cultivation & harvesting, make Mastic (Mastiha) a unique ingredient with clear, yellowish colour & intense, botanical aroma.
The production of “Skinos | Mastiha Spirit” is the outcome of a tedious & thorough work associated with nature. Traditional techniques of cultivation, harvesting & cleaning are combined with a state of the art technology. Mastic (Mastiha) trees are only cultivated in one place in the world: the small island of Chios. Harvesting occurs only once per year during the months of June & July. The process consists of a number of “prickings” & takes several weeks to extract the resin. The tree is “crying out” the resins that take 10 to 20 days to get solid & be collected. Then they are carefully transferred in wooden coffins covered with boat textiles to a cool warehouse where the women of the village pick out only the most qualitative resins & clean them by hand. Mastic (Mastiha) is mixed with fine-quality alcohol & is put in bronze tanks – called alembic. The mix is heated by fire. This process ends up with a delicate extract of unique aroma. Fine-quality sugar, alcohol & mineral water are added to complement the mixture & create a distinctive but balanced white spirit.
At “Skinos Dark | Mastiha & Coffee Bitter” the premium liqueur is combined with arabica coffee extracts, creating a final product that is a tribute to the legendary Greek hospitality.
