The Ammonite symbol…
“Gaia Wines” was founded in 1994 by Yiannis Paraskevopoulos, an Agriculturist from AUTh & PhD in Enology from the University of Bordeaux III, & Leon Karatsalos, also an Agriculturist from AUTh. Both founders are examples of the Greek mindset of travelling & of gaining knowledge & experience, characteristics which are transformed into their wines, aiming to offer all wine lovers worldwide, the best possible result, each in their own unique way.
We first met Assyrtiko in Santorini, its motherland. There, from porous & bone-dry volcanic soil, great wines arise; with uniquely high minerality & impressive acidity. Wines for connoisseurs that are sometimes complex but grand, nonetheless… & then Assyrtiko travelled across the country & it did so well, from the Macedonian north to the vine-bearer, the Peloponnese, in the south. Suddenly we saw a completely different Assyrtiko being born through this wandering. Beautiful wines, with refreshing acidity & intense fruity aromas – citrus & other, more tropical & more plethoric – comprise a character entirely different & lighter than that of the Santorinian ancestors.
“Monograph Assyrtiko” captures a multileveled manner, which can be achieved with this Greek variety, when it is cultivated with knowledge & persistence, on the semi-mountainous calciferous soils of Koutsi, Nemea. A youthful Assyrtiko, friendly & refreshing, which can be enjoyed just as much with fine seafood, or on its own, unchaperoned; or perhaps just with good company!
… The fossil of the Aegean Sea!
