Ktima Gerovassiliou… the brainchild of Vangelis Gerovassiliou!
On the slopes of Epanomi, a few kilometres from the city of Thessaloniki, a meticulously tended vineyard surrounds the modern winery, where the renowned Ktima Gerovassiliou wines are produced. At Ktima Gerovassiliou the vineyard is cultivated with great care & enthusiasm that leads V. Gerovassiliou to constantly research & experiment with Greek & foreign varieties, both well- & less- known. New technological advances blend well with tradition throughout vine growing & vinification processes. The aim is to produce high-quality wines from grapes cultivated in the privately-owned vineyard which exhibit all the distinctive characteristics of the specific microclimate (terroir) of Epanomi. The creation of the Wine Museum, in combination with its various organised activities, including visits, wine tastings, educational programs, seminars, publications, lectures, theatrical, & musical performances, further contributes to the diffusion of wine-growing culture.
“Avaton – Kokkino” is a luscious blend of three Greek indigenous red varieties: Limnio, Mavroudi & Mavrotragano. Limnio, mentioned by comic dramatist Aristophanes as “Limnia ampelos” in the 5th century BC (vine from the Greek island Limnos), is the oldest attested Greek grape variety & predominates in this blend. Following extraction & completion of alcoholic & malolactic fermentation in special oak tanks from Burgundy, the wine matures in French oak barrels. It has a brilliant, deep-red colour & a complex bouquet of ripe dark fruits (raspberries), raisins, coffee & cacao. On the palate, gentle tannins are supported by an abundance of fruit, creating power & balance. The aftertaste continues with a repetition of the spices. Excellent ageing potential. It pairs nicely with red meat stews in spicy sauces & game.
Served at 16-18°C.
