Frightfully Good, Indeed…

Valsamikes-Kremes-Header

Have you noticed our new logo’s tagline “for conscious_foodlovers”? We think it is time to give you some examples of what we mean by it!

We start with a comparison of our Balsamic Cream with Fig from Cretan Nectar & the similar products that you can find on 4 other Greek webshops (2 of them have the Galaxy brand & the 2 others the Vrionis one). We have to stress that at the moment, we are the only ones to offer the ingredients & allergens lists on our webshop!

But let’s compare the products, through the eyes of a “Food Scientist”, that can evaluate the quality. We see that the product from Vrionis has actually no figs but only aroma! Furthermore, it has a not-so-nice colouring… that is also a preservative due to the sulfites it contains! Finally, on the label, there is no % mentioned for any of the ingredients but also there is no description of what their balsamic vinegar is composed of!

When we check the product from Galaxy, we notice that while the label says Balsamic Cream with Fig, the description over the ingredients list is more accurate mentioning that is actually a Balsamic Vinegar Sauce with Fig Juice. So, in that case, we have fig in the product but only juice from concentrate (9%), There is a detailed description of the balsamic vinegar composition that is used as a base (58%), where next to the not-so-nice colouring there is an extra preservative containing sulfites. On the rest of the ingredients, you see extra water (is cheap right?), sugar (also cheap right?) & glucose-fructose syrup (is cheap & not-so-nice right?) that make it clear why it is not really a glaze but more a sauce thickened with the 2 gums (xanthan & cellulose) to give the glaze sensation. In the end, you can find a 3rd preservative…!!!

What have we chosen? An all-natural glaze consisting of barely 3 ingredients! Namely, concentrated grape must & grape vinegar, which is the Cretan Nectar’s balsamic vinegar, & (real!) dried fig paste (20%)! So, no aroma, no juice from concentrates, but a dried paste that gives an amazing flavour & great consistency to the product!

Don’t you think it is time to reconsider which balsamic cream is actually “expensive”?

Update 21/03/24: The cost for our balsamic cream with fig is still 3.95€. The one from Galaxy can also be found from 2.95€ but up to 3.75€. Finally, the one from Vrionis has an updated, & even worse, composition (check below) & can be found a bit cheaper but also much more expensive too, namely from 3.35€ to 6.10€!!!
